About this position

Doctoral Researcher in Sustainability Science at the University of Luxembourg, Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE), Department of Social Sciences.

This fully funded PhD position is part of ECOJUST – Ecologically Just Climate Resilient Development, an interdisciplinary project in the Sustainability Science and Transformation research group. The project examines how citizen science and participatory research can support climate-resilient development and ecological justice in urban environments. The doctoral researcher will study how ecological health, human wellbeing, and climate vulnerability interact during extreme weather events such as urban heat, drought, and heavy rainfall, and how these relationships can inform more equitable and regenerative climate adaptation.

The role combines conceptual and applied research. The successful candidate will conduct original doctoral research, develop and implement qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method approaches, and contribute to the co-design of citizen science activities. Additional responsibilities include building ecological and social indicators for climate resilience, supporting surveys, workshops, participatory activities, stakeholder engagement, and the development of the project’s citizen science platform and knowledge systems. The researcher will also present findings at conferences and contribute to scientific publications.

The position is well suited to candidates interested in sustainability science, environmental governance, social-ecological systems, urban resilience, and nature-based solutions. The team values collaboration, creativity, mutual support, and engagement with citizens, policy makers, local communities, and non-academic partners.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in sustainability science, geography, environmental social sciences or humanities, environmental studies, ecology, urban studies, landscape architecture, science and technology studies, environmental humanities, or a related field; strong interest in climate resilience, ecological justice, citizen science, and sustainability transformations; excellent English (C1); and at least B2-level proficiency in the language of the thesis. Experience with qualitative or mixed methods, GIS, mapping, surveys, interviews, workshops, or participatory methods is desirable.

Funding and conditions: the post is advertised as a fully funded doctoral researcher contract for 36 months at full time (40 hours/week). The University of Luxembourg offers a multilingual, international research environment on the Kirchberg Campus with strong links to professional sectors and societal partners.

Application: submit a CV, cover letter explaining your motivation and fit for the doctoral topic, a transcript of modules and results, and the names and contact information of up to three referees. Applications must be submitted online via the HR system; email applications are not considered.
