About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Sustainability Science at the University of Luxembourg, within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences and the Department of Social Sciences.

The role sits in the Sustainability Science and Transformation research group, an interdisciplinary and internationally connected environment focused on participatory, transdisciplinary, and transformative research. The project, ECOJUST – Ecologically Just Climate Resilient Development, is funded through the Climate Nexus Framework Convention and aims to co-design a citizen science approach that reveals hidden vulnerabilities, interdependencies, and opportunities for regenerative action related to climate resilience, ecological health, and social wellbeing.

The successful candidate will help shape the scientific direction of the project, coordinate participatory research, and oversee the development of a citizen science platform and digital tools. The work addresses themes including sustainability transitions, environmental governance, citizen science, ecological justice, climate adaptation, and the relationships between science, policy, and society. Core tasks include independent and collaborative research, project strategy development, designing participatory methods, mapping vulnerabilities and capacities linked to extreme weather and urban heat, stakeholder workshops, co-design processes, partnerships with policymakers and civil society, data quality assurance, and contribution to creative outputs and future funding opportunities.

Applicants should hold a PhD in environmental social sciences or humanities, sustainability science, geography, environmental governance, science and technology studies, urban studies, or a closely related interdisciplinary field with a strong social science component. The post requires mixed-methods experience, evidence of strong publication potential, and experience with interviews, workshops, focus groups, or participatory research. Strong interest in citizen science, ecological justice, climate resilience, sustainability transformations, and regenerative governance is important. English proficiency at C1 is required, along with good knowledge of German (B2) or French (B2). Willingness to travel within Luxembourg and internationally is expected; additional desirable experience includes participatory action research, urban climate adaptation, digital participation platforms, participatory mapping, open science, research data management, science-policy interfaces, and grant writing.

The appointment is a fixed-term contract of 34.5 months at 40 hours per week on the Kirchberg Campus in Luxembourg. Applications should include a CV, cover letter tailored to the project, PhD diploma or evidence of expected defense date, and degree certificates and transcripts. Candidates must apply online through the HR system; applications by email will not be considered. Early application is encouraged because applications are processed upon receipt.
