About this position

LUT University is recruiting two doctoral researchers for its internationally recognised hydrogen research team in Finland. The positions are part of a Research Council of Finland-funded project focused on improving the energy efficiency of high-voltage alkaline water electrolysis stacks powered by solar and wind energy. One doctoral position centres on modelling and AI-assisted optimisation of electrolysis systems. The research involves developing electrolysis system models, integrating AI-based optimisation approaches, and applying simulation and data-driven methods to improve performance under variable renewable energy conditions. The second position focuses on fluid dynamics and optimisation of electrolysis systems, using fluid mechanics expertise to enhance alkaline water electrolysis performance and energy efficiency. Both positions contribute to the development of scalable renewable hydrogen technologies for carbon-neutral energy systems.

The doctoral researchers will join LUT’s hydrogen research group, which has more than ten years of experience in renewable electricity-based hydrogen production and collaborates with industry and leading universities in Finland and abroad. The team’s multidisciplinary environment combines scientific research with real-world energy transition challenges and has contributed to successful spin-off companies. The roles may also include teaching-related tasks and other duties supporting the research group.

Applicants should hold a relevant MSc or equivalent degree in areas such as electrical engineering, information technology, computer engineering, applied physics, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, energy technology, or fluid dynamics. Strong English skills, the ability to work independently and in teams, and a clear commitment to doctoral research are required. For the modelling/AI position, strong analytical skills and interest in AI, simulation, and optimisation are important. For the fluid dynamics position, a solid foundation in fluid mechanics is expected, and experience in fluid dynamics-based optimisation is an advantage. Selected candidates must apply to the LUT Doctoral School within the first two months of the appointment.

The appointment starts with a one-year term, including a six-month trial period, and may be extended by up to three years depending on study and research progress. The work starts as soon as possible, with a negotiable start date, and is based in Lappeenranta with a hybrid work model. The salary is set according to the Finnish university pay system, with a starting salary of approximately EUR 3,100 per month, depending on experience and qualifications.
