About this position

Doctoral student in Astrophysics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

This PhD position is hosted by KTH’s astrophysics research environment and linked to the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics (OKC) at AlbaNova University Centre. The project focuses on X-ray astronomy, especially emission from supernovae and supernova remnants, and uses observational data, data mining, and other data-intensive methods to investigate the properties of compact objects formed in supernova explosions. The work will make use of major X-ray observatories such as XMM-Newton and Chandra, together with complementary multiwavelength observations from other facilities.

The successful doctoral student will join the research group of Professor Josefin Larsson and may collaborate on related projects involving infrared and optical studies of supernova remnants. The wider environment at KTH also includes instrumentation development for X-ray astronomy and studies of gamma-ray bursts. Through OKC, the student will be part of an active international community with seminars, collaborative opportunities, and a strong concentration of researchers working on supernovae and related topics.

Eligibility requirements include a second-cycle degree (for example, a master’s degree), at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 second-cycle credits, or equivalent knowledge, with the basic academic background in astronomy or physics. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Preferred experience includes an MSc project in astronomy, experience with astronomical data analysis, and strong written and oral communication skills. KTH also stresses goal orientation, perseverance, independent work, collaboration, professionalism, and the ability to analyse complex issues.

Funding is provided as a doctoral student employment position with monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement. The position is full time and temporary, with admission only possible for those accepted to doctoral education. The planned start is beginning of 2027 or earlier.
