About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in computational modelling of zinc-metal batteries, based in the Stenlid lab at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. This research opportunity is at the forefront of sustainable energy storage, focusing on the development of affordable, safe, and recyclable aqueous zinc-metal batteries. The project is part of the Swedish Energy Agency’s 'Sustainable Battery Value Chain' program and is conducted in close collaboration with the Maibach group at the Division of Materials Physics, providing a multidisciplinary environment that bridges computational chemistry, electrochemistry, and advanced materials characterization.

As a doctoral student, you will employ advanced computational chemistry and materials modelling techniques to investigate and control interfacial reactions in zinc-metal batteries. The research aims to address key challenges such as dendrite formation, corrosion, and by-product generation at the zinc–electrolyte interface, which currently limit large-scale deployment. The work involves a broad range of computational methodologies, including atomistic and electronic-structure–based modelling, machine learning, high-throughput screening, and ab initio calculations of electrochemical reaction kinetics. The project is designed to foster your development as an independent researcher and offers opportunities for research visits to national and international groups.

The Stenlid lab is dedicated to fundamental questions in surface and electrochemistry, with a focus on designing materials for catalytic and energy storage applications. The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers is renowned for its research in chemistry, materials science, renewable energy, and chemical engineering, providing a vibrant and supportive academic environment. Chalmers offers a dynamic workplace in Gothenburg, Sweden, with comprehensive employee benefits, including support for international staff and initiatives to promote gender equality.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field. For international candidates, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong English communication skills are required. Preferred qualifications include experience with quantum and computational chemistry, electrochemistry, batteries, programming (Python or similar), and prior research experience.

Funding: The position is fully funded for four years, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and includes all standard Chalmers employee benefits. The contract may be extended up to five years with additional teaching duties.

Application: Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files via the provided application link. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, copies of theses, transcripts, and certificates. The deadline for applications is March 8, 2026. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. Assessment tests may be conducted as part of the recruitment process.
