About this position

Doctoral Student in Environmental Bioengineering at ETH Zurich (Zurich, Switzerland).

The Environmental Microfluidics Group of Prof. Roman Stocker in the Institute of Environmental Engineering is recruiting a PhD student for a project on bacterial chemotaxis, plasmid transfer, and the spread of antibiotic resistance in aquatic environments. The project is a joint effort with Prof. Jonasz Slomka at the University of Warsaw and is funded by a recently awarded SNSF grant.

This is a highly experimental, interdisciplinary PhD at the interface of bioengineering, microbiology, microfluidics, and fluid mechanics. The student will design and build instrumentation, integrate chemotaxis assays with controlled shear systems, run conjugation experiments with bacterial donors and recipients, image fluorescent bacteria and chemical plumes, analyze quantitative data, and contribute to mathematical models of plasmid spread.

Applicants should have an MSc in bioengineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, physics, or a related field. Practical experience with CAD, 3D printing, machining, control systems, sensors, microcontrollers, automation, or data-acquisition coding is strongly preferred. Familiarity with microscopy, image analysis, fluid mechanics, or microfluidics is beneficial. Fluency in English and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary teamwork are required.

The position is based in the laboratory of Prof. Roman Stocker at ETH Zurich. Applications are reviewed as they are received, and the final deadline is 15 December 2026. To apply, submit your CV, one-page cover letter, full transcript, thesis copy, and at least two reference letters via the online portal. Questions can be directed to Dr Stefano Ugolini at [email protected].
