About this position

Doctoral student in Fluidized-Bed CO₂ Adsorption at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.

This PhD position is part of the Division of Energy Technology in the Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences, within a research group focused on fluidization and carbon capture. The project is embedded in FlexCSAR, an EU-funded initiative developing a flexible, adsorption-based technology for capturing CO₂ from flue gases using a gas-solids fluidized-bed system. The research aims to advance efficient low-emission solutions for energy and industry by combining low-grade heat, vacuum, and heat pumps to enable optimized operation depending on electricity and heat availability and price.

The doctoral student will contribute to experimental and theoretical research in fluidized-bed adsorption. Planned work includes designing, building, and instrumenting a physical model of a fluidized-bed adsorption stage; measuring and studying solids fluid dynamics, interphase mass transfer, and bed-to-exchanger heat transfer; developing closure expressions for mass and heat transfer models; and writing scientific publications and project reports. The position also includes advanced courses in the Graduate School of Energy, Environment and Systems at Chalmers, as well as teaching or other duties corresponding to up to 20% of working hours.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant Master's degree (or, for applicants educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree may be accepted), plus a proactive attitude. Experience in experimental research, data processing, and programming is considered advantageous. The application must be submitted in English as PDF files through the online form. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, a short motivation statement, and Bachelor’s and, if available, Master’s thesis together with transcripts.

Funding and conditions: the doctoral position is fully funded from the start. It is a fixed-term appointment of four years, extendable to five years if teaching up to 20% is undertaken. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the agreed study start date.

Application deadline: October 7, 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Stockholm).

A proactive attitude is required. Experience in experimental research and in data processing/programming will strengthen the application. The application must be written in English and include CV, personal letter, a brief motivation, and Bachelor’s and, if available, Master’s thesis together with transcripts.
