About this position

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in minimal climate impact hydrogen aircraft design. This opportunity is part of a recently funded excellence cluster focused on hydrogen solutions for heavy transport, offering a dynamic research environment within the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Division of Fluid Dynamics. The project aims to advance the design of future aircraft by integrating climate modelling and multidisciplinary optimization methods, targeting low-emission and low-contrail hydrogen-powered aircraft concepts. Research activities will involve collaboration with international partners and the use of state-of-the-art design tools.

The doctoral student will develop and apply advanced techniques combining aircraft performance, aerodynamics, structural analysis, and atmospheric modelling. The position is embedded in a vibrant academic community with strong industry connections and access to international Master’s programmes in Applied Mechanics and Mobility Engineering. The research will contribute to sustainable aviation and climate-aware engineering solutions.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 or 60 credits) in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering physics, applied mathematics, or a related field. For candidates educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Mandatory experience includes at least one of the following: aircraft design, aerodynamics, propulsion, CFD, multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), or numerical modelling. Additional skills in optimization methods, aerodynamic shape optimization, conceptual aircraft design, climate-aware aviation analysis, and familiarity with tools such as OpenVSP, SUAVE, CFD software, or other aerospace simulation environments are highly valued. Prior research project experience, scientific publications, or collaboration with industry or international research groups will strengthen your application. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

The position is fully funded from the start, with a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). The appointment is fixed-term for four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20% of working hours, potentially extending the position to five years. As a doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy comprehensive benefits, including generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender balance and equality, offering initiatives such as the GENIE project. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers to help you settle in.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Required documents include your CV, personal letter, motivation, and thesis with transcripts. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is 25th June 2026. For questions, contact Professor Tomas Grönstedt ([email protected]).

This position offers the chance to contribute to innovative research in sustainable aviation, work in a collaborative international environment, and benefit from the resources and support of Chalmers University of Technology.
