About this position

Karolinska Institutet is advertising a Doctoral student (PhD) position in computational pathology and medical artificial intelligence within the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) in Stockholm, Sweden. The project is based at the Solna campus and sits in a highly interdisciplinary research environment focused on precision medicine, cancer diagnostics, and data-driven health research.

The doctoral student will join a research group working at the intersection of digital pathology, machine learning, deep learning, image analysis, and clinical oncology. The group develops and evaluates AI methods for analyzing large-scale whole-slide pathology images and multimodal datasets, combining image data with molecular and clinical variables to improve diagnosis, grading, prognostication, and treatment decision-making in cancer, especially prostate cancer. The work includes both in-house state-of-the-art models and publicly available foundation models, with an emphasis on scalable and clinically relevant solutions.

The research environment is connected to the national Data Driven Life Sciences (DDLS) program and SciLifeLab, and offers collaboration with academic and industry partners nationally and internationally. The group also works on translating research findings into practical healthcare tools, including efforts supported by the KI Innovations office. This creates opportunities for international exposure, conference participation, and cross-disciplinary training during the doctoral education.

The position is suitable for applicants with a strong interest in computational pathology, medical AI, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, computer science, image/signal processing, software engineering, statistics, or related fields. The successful candidate is expected to have a master’s degree or equivalent, solid ML/AI understanding, programming ability, and fluency in English. Helpful experience includes digital pathology tools, biomedical image data, PyTorch or related frameworks, Python, software engineering practices, high-performance computing, and scientific writing.

This is a doctoral studentship with a contractual salary and full-time employment for up to four years. Applicants must meet Karolinska Institutet’s general and specific eligibility requirements for doctoral education, including the required English proficiency level.
