University of Huddersfield - Computing and Engineering School- The Future Metrology Hub
Supervision team: Dr Hussam Muhamedsalih, Prof Liam Blunt, Prof X. (Jane) Jiang, Dr Dawei Tang
PhD Project Title: Novel In-line Optical Metrology for Thin Film Manufacturing
We are offering a fully funded PhD studentship for UK home students to join the EPSRC Future Metrology Hub at the University of Huddersfield. You’ll develop next-generation real-time optical metrology instrumentation to advance thin-film manufacturing — from roll-to-roll (R2R) coating processes for flexible electronics to thin-film deposition in semiconductor fabrication.
?? Project Overview
This PhD will focus on the development of novel optical measurement technologies for real-time inspection of nano/micro-thickness films, enabling responsive manufacturing control.
Your research will investigate:
? Development of advanced optical metrology systems and their characterisation
? Signal processing techniques for extracting meaningful measurement data
? Integration of control systems to improve thin-film coating processes
You’ll benefit from access to state-of-the-art metrology and manufacturing facilities within the Future Metrology Hub.
?? Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a motivated UK-based student with:
?? A First Class or Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related discipline
?? Knowledge or experience in instrumentation, metrology, and signal processing
??? Start Date: October 2025
?? How to Apply
Interested candidates should contact Dr Hussam Muhamedsalih ( [email protected] ) directly or apply via the University of Huddersfield’s postgraduate research portal:
