About this position

Cranfield University is advertising a PhD in 3D temperature field reconstruction for wire-arc directed energy deposition (WA-DED), a metal additive manufacturing process that uses wire feedstock and an electric arc heat source.

The project focuses on converting 2D surface temperature measurements into full 3D temperature fields to improve process control, defect mitigation, and understanding of thermal evolution in additive manufacturing. The research combines scientific computing, finite element analysis, thermal monitoring, and experimental validation, with applications in large-scale metal manufacturing.

The student will be based at the Welding and Additive Manufacturing Centre (WAMC) and may interact with industrial partners such as WAAM3D and members of WAAMMat. The project is aligned with industrial research on wire-based DED technology maturation and landing gear applications.

Eligibility highlights: a first or second-class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in a related field such as mechanical, manufacturing, or materials engineering; strong interest in modelling, monitoring, and manufacturing; good understanding of process physics and heat transfer; and English language proficiency for international candidates. Experience with thermal processes or additive manufacturing is advantageous.

Funding: the position is self-funded, although experiment and facility costs are supported by the centre.

Deadline: 2026-11-18. Interested applicants should apply through Cranfield University’s online PhD application form and may contact Dr Yongle Sun for further information.
