About this position

Brock University is advertising fully funded MSc, PhD, and Postdoctoral positions in kinesiology and related interdisciplinary areas. The project is led by Dr. Ryan T. Schroeder (Assistant Professor, Department of Engineering) and Dr. Shawn Beaudette (Associate Professor, Department of Kinesiology) at Brock University in Ontario, Canada.

The research focuses on wearable technology, biomechanics, and movement-art interventions to support healthy aging and increase physical activity in older adults. The flyer describes a project titled Creativity in Motion: Technology-Enhanced Art Therapy to Motivate Physical Activity in Older Adults, centered on developing and evaluating a wearable movement-to-art technology (WMAT) that converts human motion into real-time music and/or visual art.

Students and postdoctoral scholars may contribute to wearable sensing system design, signal processing, real-time motion-to-art mapping, intervention studies with older adults, gait and balance assessment, psychosocial and qualitative research, and integration of artistic elements such as music, sound synthesis, or visual outputs. The project also includes technology development, a 12-week intervention study, and public dissemination through an artistic exhibition.

Applicants from a range of backgrounds are encouraged, including biomedical/mechanical/electrical engineering, kinesiology/biomechanics/human movement science, computer science/data science/AI, psychology/social sciences, and music technology/digital media/interactive arts. A strong academic record, interest in interdisciplinary human-centered research, and relevant experience in sensors, motion capture, programming, human-subject research, or creative technologies are preferred. International applicants must meet Canadian study permit and English-language requirements.

The positions are fully funded through a mix of graduate fellowships, graduate assistantships, and external grant support for MSc/PhD students, with competitive external grant funding for postdoctoral scholars. Applications are accepted until May 4, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET.
