About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity starting Jan 2027 at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Department of Materials Science and Engineering, under Associate Professor Qian He.

The project offers two possible research directions: (1) Advanced Electron Microscopy, including AI for microscopy, and (2) Heterogeneous Catalysis for Sustainability. The microscopy direction focuses on low-dose and in situ/operando TEM/STEM, XEDS, EELS, 4D-STEM, automated experiments, and AI-assisted data analysis to study beam-sensitive and dynamically evolving materials at atomic scale. The catalysis direction focuses on ultrasmall nanoalloys and sub-nm alloys for sustainability-related reactions, combining catalyst synthesis and testing with atomic-resolution in situ/operando microscopy.

The post highlights access to new microscopy infrastructure at NUS, including Thermo Scientific Iliad and Nion HERMES microscopes scheduled for installation in 2027, which will support cutting-edge research in electron microscopy and catalyst characterization.

Funding is fully provided for 4 years and includes 100% tuition fee coverage plus a competitive stipend. Applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline. The supervisor also seeks self-motivated, enthusiastic candidates with an optimistic mindset and willingness to take on challenges. For non-native English speakers, TOEFL iBT 85 or IELTS Academic 6.0 is required. Outstanding GPA ranking is encouraged for international applicants.

Application deadline: 1 Aug 2026. Apply via the NUS Graduate Admission System link provided in the post, and contact [email protected] for inquiries.
