About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Edinburgh in Chemical Biology and Immunology.
This 4-year PhD project sits at the interface of chemical biology, cancer research, and immune cell biology. The research will investigate how the immune system recognises cells and how cancer cells evade detection through a newly identified “Don’t-Eat-Me” signal protein that helps cells avoid phagocytosis.
The successful candidate will use mRNA display to screen very large peptide libraries and will work on: identifying molecules that bind the target protein and its cancer-specific forms; developing imaging agents to study expression and interactions in live cells; and investigating the protein’s role in uptake of cancer cells by human phagocytes.
The project is co-supervised by Ewen D. D. Calder and Dr Sonja Vermeren. The student will join both research teams, based at the Institute for Regeneration and Repair with support from the University of Edinburgh School of Chemistry.
Funding: EastBio BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership funding covers stipend and tuition fees. The opportunity is open to UK and international students.
Eligibility/background: Applicants with backgrounds in chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, or cell biology are especially encouraged.
Deadline: 16 November 2026.
How to apply: Review the full project description on the linked FindAPhD page and follow the application instructions provided there. Informal email queries are welcomed.
