About this position
PhD opportunity in plant chemical defence, single-cell biology, genomics, and metabolomics at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich, United Kingdom, working with the Osbourn group at the John Innes Centre.
This project asks where plants make their medicine: how different cells in infected leaves activate distinct chemical defence pathways, how those cell states are organised around infection sites, and how this organisation may reveal new biosynthetic pathways. The research combines plant biology, plant cell biology, genetics, genomics, biochemistry, molecular biology, plant pathology, immunology, and natural-product chemistry.
You will create fluorescent reporter plants in Arabidopsis thaliana, use advanced microscopy to track defence-pathway activation during bacterial and fungal infection, and analyse gene-activity and chromatin profiles from around 100,000 infected leaf nuclei. You will then use multiplex genome editing, pathogen assays, and metabolomics to test candidate gene modules and determine what compounds they produce and whether they improve resistance.
The project is based at The Sainsbury Laboratory and includes training in plant molecular biology, advanced imaging, single-cell data analysis, genome editing, plant pathology, and chemistry. The post is suitable for students who are curious about plant defence and interested in combining experimental work with computational analysis; prior experience in every technique is not required.
This is a fully funded 4-year studentship through the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NRPDTP) for October 2027 entry. Funding includes tuition fees, a living stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27), and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year. Applicants will also complete a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS) during the PhD.
Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027. Interested candidates should review the NRPDTP eligibility and application guidance, use the required personal and research statement templates, and submit their application through the doctoral training partnership process.

What's required
Applicants should be curious about plant defence and able to connect experimental biology with data analysis and chemistry. Experience across all areas is not expected, but interest in plant molecular biology, advanced imaging, single-cell data analysis, genome editing, plant pathology, and natural-product chemistry is relevant. The programme is open to students worldwide and shortlisted applicants will be interviewed.
How to apply
Visit the NRPDTP website for eligibility details and application instructions, and use the required personal and research statement templates. Register your interest through the FindAPhD page if prompted, then complete the formal application via the doctoral training partnership process.
