About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom, focused on single-cell multi-omics, enhancer biology, and the developmental control of blood and cardiovascular fate.

The project investigates how enhancer activity changes as blood, endothelial, and cardiac lineages emerge in the chick embryo. You will combine single-cell RNA-sequencing and ATAC-sequencing to reconstruct gene-regulatory networks, identify candidate enhancers, and study how hematoendothelial progenitors generate the first blood and vascular cells. Experimental work includes cloning candidate enhancers into fluorescent reporter constructs, imaging enhancer activity in living embryos, and using CRISPR-based perturbation and motif mutagenesis to test gene regulation and fate decisions in vivo.

You will be supervised by Dr Gi Fay Mok with a collaborative team including Professor Andrea Münsterberg, Dr Iain Macaulay, and Dr Wilfried Haerty, spanning the University of East Anglia and the Earlham Institute. The project offers interdisciplinary training in developmental biology, molecular genetics, imaging, single-cell genomics, computational biology, bioinformatics, genetics, genomics, and molecular biology.

This is a fully funded 4-year studentship through the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NRPDTP). Funding includes tuition fees, a living stipend, and a Research Training Support Grant. The programme also includes a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS).

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent Bachelors (Honours) degree at 2:1 level and meet the English language requirement (IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category, or equivalent). The project is open to students worldwide.

Apply via the NRPDTP website and follow the programme’s instructions, including the required Personal and Research statement templates. The project has been shortlisted for funding; shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027. Start date: 1 October 2027.
