About this position

Imperial College London is recruiting a fully funded PhD candidate for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network SPARK, focused on space–time metamaterials, structured light, nanophotonics, and ultrafast optics. The project is based in the group of Professor Riccardo Sapienza in the Blackett Laboratory, Department of Physics, and leads to a PhD awarded by Imperial College London.

The project, Space–Time Beams for and from Space–Time Metamaterials, will experimentally generate and characterise space–time beams interacting with space–time metamaterials. Research topics include complex helical light fields, synthetic motion with circular acceleration, synchrotron radiation, hyperspectral imaging, and theoretical modelling of non-separable space–time beams. The work is part of the wider SPARK network on spatiotemporal metamaterials and structured light fields.

The network includes leading academic and industrial partners across Europe, with secondments at Universidad Pública de Navarra for theory development and Nireos for advanced spectroscopy techniques. Training includes network-wide research activities, transferable skills workshops, conferences, and industrial experience.

Eligibility: applicants should hold or be about to complete a Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline, and have experience from a Master’s research project or equivalent in a relevant experimental field. The post is open to applicants of any nationality, subject to MSCA rules, including the mobility rule and the requirement that the candidate does not already hold a doctoral degree.

Funding: the position is fully funded for 36 months. The candidate will be employed by Imperial College London as a Research Assistant (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Candidate) with a salary of £35,470 to £46,863 per annum, plus possible family allowances under MSCA rules and standard employee benefits.

How to apply: apply via the Imperial College London jobs website. Prepare a full CV, a two-page research statement, and the supporting statement requested in the application form. The position starts on 1 February 2027.
