About this position
Umeå University is advertising a PhD position in Experimental Physics with a focus on photonics and materials science (fundamental aspects) in the Department of Physics. The project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network SPARK and centers on spatiotemporal hybrid light–matter states, including spatiotemporal polaritons, ultrafast light–matter interactions, metamaterials, nanophotonics, ultrafast optics, condensed matter physics, and quantum optics.
The doctoral candidate will work on wide-bandgap semiconductors and excitonic or molecular emitters coupled to time-modulated gratings, using ultrafast pump–push–probe experiments, finite-element simulations, and quantum models extending the Tavis–Cummings Hamiltonian. The goal is to demonstrate coherent control of spatiotemporal polaritons and design new spatiotemporal metamaterial platforms.
The position is based at Umeå University, Sweden, under the supervision of Associate Professor Nicolò Maccaferri, with co-supervision and mentoring by Associate Professor Paloma Arroyo Huidobro at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and an industrial mentor at Ultrafast Innovations GmbH. The project includes a 6-month research secondment in Spain and a 3-month industrial secondment in Germany.
Funding: The position is funded for 36 months through the MSCA Doctoral Network SPARK, with a salary corresponding to at least the MSCA level (approximately 33,100 SEK gross per month) and possible additional MSCA allowances for mobility and family members. Funding for the remainder of the employment period is provided from other sources.
Eligibility: Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, applied physics, optics/photonics, materials science, nanoscience, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. A completed advanced-level degree or equivalent coursework is required, including at least 120 credits in physics for doctoral admission. Strong English skills are mandatory. Relevant experience in photonics, nanophotonics, ultrafast optics, condensed matter physics, quantum optics, exciton-polaritons, light–matter interaction, numerical simulations, or quantum modelling is considered meritorious. MSCA mobility rules apply.
Application deadline: 2026-11-30. Apply via the Varbi e-recruitment system and upload a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, thesis/publication copies if any, and reference details in PDF format.
