Uppsala University is offering a fully funded PhD position in sustainable plasmon-driven photocatalysis, located at the Ångström Laboratory within the Department of Chemistry. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about green chemistry, photoelectrocatalysis, and the development of next-generation catalytic materials for sustainable chemical transformations.
The research project focuses on the development of plasmon-driven photoelectrocatalytic platforms for proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and photoredox catalysis. The main goal is to understand and exploit multi-site concerted electron-proton transfer mechanisms to selectively activate challenging chemical bonds (N–H, O–H, C–H) under mild, sustainable conditions. The work combines plasmonic materials, photoelectrochemistry, and ultrafast laser spectroscopy to investigate and control charge transfer, hydrogen bonding, and energy transfer mechanisms at interfaces.
Key research activities include designing and fabricating plasmonic photoelectrodes, conducting advanced spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements (UV-Vis, Raman, XPS, transient absorption, photoluminescence), and analyzing reaction products using NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and HPLC/GC-MS. The project also involves computational modeling (DFT) of bond dissociation free energies and charge transfer energetics, as well as data analysis using statistical and machine learning approaches. Collaboration with project partners at Uppsala University, Gothenburg University, and Sorbonne University is expected, providing an interdisciplinary and international research environment.
Applicants should hold a second-cycle degree (Master's or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field, with at least 240 credits in higher education and 60 credits at the Master's level, including an independent project. Required skills include experience in photocatalysis, electrochemistry, laboratory techniques for materials synthesis, electrode preparation, and analytical methods. Strong motivation for interdisciplinary research, interest in sustainability, and excellent English communication skills are essential. Merits include experience with plasmonic or photoredox systems, time-resolved spectroscopy, and surface analysis techniques.
The position is fully funded, full-time (100%), and temporary according to the Higher Education Ordinance. Salary is individualized. The starting date is 1 February 2026 or as agreed.
