About this position

Dr. Chelly Maes at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is recruiting 3 fully funded PhD researchers for GENSCOPE, an ERC-funded project on digital media, gender beliefs, body image, sexuality development, adolescent development, mental health, and well-being.

The project examines how adolescents navigate conflicting gender narratives across social media, television, and video games, and how these experiences shape beliefs, identity, and well-being. The three PhD projects will focus on: (1) gender beliefs, attitudes & related behaviours, (2) body image development, and (3) sexuality development.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Communication Science, Psychology, Sociology, Behavioural Sciences, or a related discipline. The post also looks for candidates with prior research experience, interest in academic research, a foundation in quantitative and/or qualitative methods, strong teamwork skills, international/interdisciplinary motivation, and excellent English.

The positions are based in Brussels, Belgium. GENSCOPE will involve researchers from Belgium, Italy, and Czechia, and selected PhD researchers will relocate to Belgium and join ULB’s doctoral programme. The appointment starts on 1 March 2027 and lasts up to 4 years.

Application deadline: 12 October 2026.

How to apply: Email your CV, motivation letter, a short statement on how you envision your PhD within GENSCOPE, and an academic writing sample to [email protected]. See the full vacancy details via the linked announcement.
