About this position
PhD studentship in cocrystals as probes for the local conditions in resonant acoustic mixing at the University of Birmingham, School of Chemistry, in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl).
This is a fully funded PhD project in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, structural chemistry, and materials science. The project will investigate how powders experience local temperature and pressure during resonant acoustic mixing, using model cocrystal systems, advanced experimental characterization, and ab initio computational modelling. The work is based in the Birmingham Centre for Mechanochemistry and Mechanical Processing (BCM2), with opportunities for experiments at national/international facilities such as Diamond Light Source and possible placements at Dstl.
Supervision is by Dr Adam Michalchuk and Prof Tomislav Friščić. The project is especially relevant for candidates interested in mechanochemistry, solid-state chemistry, and diffraction-based characterization of materials under processing conditions.
Funding includes an enhanced tax-free stipend of approximately £26,000/year above UKRI rates, with annual inflationary increase. Due to the available funding and security requirements, the position is suitable for candidates from the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, or the USA, subject to Dstl security checks.
Applicants should have or expect a first or upper second-class (2.1) honours degree or equivalent in chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline. A strong interest in mechanochemistry is required; familiarity with solid-state chemistry and diffraction is advantageous.
