About this position
Funded PhD project in telomere biology, cancer biology, peptide design, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and synthetic/pharmaceutical chemistry at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences and Imperial College London in London, United Kingdom.
The project asks how cells replicate chromosome ends while preserving telomere protection. You will study the shelterin complex, TRF2 interactions, and the origin recognition complex (ORC), with a focus on how disrupting these interactions may expose cancer-cell vulnerabilities. A particular emphasis is on ALT (alternative lengthening of telomeres) cancers, comparing ALT cells, telomerase-positive cancer cells, and normal cells.
Research activities include mapping protein-protein interactions using purified human proteins, quantitative binding measurements, peptide design and synthesis, peptide optimisation, computational modelling, and experiments in human cells. The project connects molecular design with cell biology and imaging, and offers training across multiple disciplines.
Supervision is provided by Prof Christian Speck, Dr Anna Barnard, and Dr A Barr. The labs are based nearby in west London, enabling close collaboration across teams.
This is a funded PhD studentship covering full tuition fees plus a tax-free stipend of £26,500 per year. Funding is available for both Home and Overseas students.
Applicants from biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in every technique is not required. Apply via the LMS studentships webpage; the FindAPhD register-interest form is not the application.
