About this position
PhD opportunity in molecular characterisation of the protein S-acylation machinery at Coventry University within the Centre for Discoveries in Life Sciences and the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP).
This funded PhD project investigates protein S-acylation (palmitoylation), a reversible post-translational modification that regulates protein localisation, stability, trafficking, and activity. The project aims to define the molecular interactions between the S-acylation machinery and substrate proteins, with a focus on enzyme-substrate recognition, specificity, and regulation. The work is highly interdisciplinary and combines cell biology, molecular biology, chemical biology, protein biochemistry, confocal microscopy, and molecular modelling at Coventry University, plus advanced mass spectrometry methods such as carbene footprinting and native mass spectrometry at the University of Warwick.
Research relevance includes biological sciences, cancer biology, cell biology, and disease mechanisms linked to diabetes and neurodegenerative/psychiatric disorders. The project is suitable for excellent students from a wide range of academic backgrounds who want training in modern molecular and structural biology approaches.
Funding: full UK-rate tuition fees, a tax-free annual stipend (currently £21,805 for 2026-27), travel/conference support, consumables budget, and a MacBook Pro for the duration of the programme. Coventry University covers the difference between UK and international tuition fees.
Eligibility: minimum 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent), with at least 60% in the project element and 60% overall module average. Non-native English speakers must meet IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each section, or TOEFL iBT 95 overall with 21 in each section.
How to apply: check your eligibility, complete the ED&I form as an expression of interest, and submit the application form. For administrative questions, contact [email protected].
