About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Warwick, Department of Physics, focused on solid-state NMR for health and life sciences. The project is led by Dr Wing Ying Chow and is based in Coventry, United Kingdom.

The Chow lab develops new applications of solid-state NMR to study the extracellular matrix (ECM) and other biological materials at the atomic scale. Research themes mentioned in the post include female reproductive health, the molecular mechanisms underlying Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and fungal cell-wall adaptation in Aureobasidium pullulans. The project also connects with collaborators at Warwick Medical School and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.

Students will gain training in experimental physics, biophysics, NMR characterisation, and potentially isotopic enrichment, complementary analytical methods, and shared research data/database development. The work uses Warwick’s world-leading solid-state NMR facility, including the High-field National Research Facility at Millburn House, plus research technology platforms in spectroscopy and proteomics.

This is a fully funded PhD for 42 months with a UK-standard annual tax-free stipend of £21,830 (rising with inflation), plus conference travel and consumables. The project is open to students worldwide, with a note that some UKRI awards are available for international students.

Eligibility: applicants should have or expect at least an upper second-class BSc honours, MSci or MPhys, or equivalent in Physics or a related subject. Non-native English speakers need IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Applications are accepted all year round, and the project is available for an October 2027 start. Interested candidates should consult the Department of Physics postgraduate application page and contact Dr Wing Ying Chow by email for project-specific discussion.
