About this position

This PhD project at the University of Strathclyde Business School investigates the interplay between green and non-green innovation in firms, focusing on the impact of regulatory policies and market dynamics. The research aims to understand how climate policies, such as carbon pricing and international agreements like the Paris Agreement, influence firms’ innovation strategies and whether these policies stimulate or hinder technological progress.

Innovation is a key driver of economic growth, competitiveness, and sustainability. Firms innovate through new products, improved technologies, and environmentally friendly solutions, but their capacity to innovate is shaped by financial constraints, competition, and government regulation. Green innovation is increasingly promoted to reduce environmental impact, yet its relationship with other forms of innovation—such as technological or product development—remains unclear. This project seeks to clarify whether green innovation complements or crowds out non-green innovation.

Using theory-driven quantitative analysis and firm-level data, the research will explore how financial pressures and climate policies affect broader R&D investments. The study draws on established literature, including works by Hall & Lerner (2010), Aghion et al. (2016), Popp (2010), Dechezleprêtre et al. (2017), Acemoglu et al. (2012), and Porter & van der Linde (1995), to frame its investigation. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers aiming to promote sustainable innovation while supporting long-term technological progress.

The position is fully funded for three years, covering all university tuition fees at the UK/home rate and providing an annual tax-free stipend. International students are eligible to apply, and exceptional candidates may receive additional funding to cover the difference between home and international tuition fees.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in business, economics, management, finance, or a related field, with quantitative skills and familiarity with economic theory and statistical analysis.
