About this position

Fathom is recruiting a Hydrological Modeller for its Hydroclimate team in the UK (Bristol, London, or hybrid/remote with quarterly Bristol visits). This is a permanent full-time industry role at the interface of research and applied flood-risk intelligence.

The position focuses on computational hydrology, hydrological modelling, land-surface modelling, climate science, and flood risk. The successful candidate will design and implement innovative approaches to simulate river floods, generate and evaluate unprecedented flood events, and incorporate climate-change impacts into Fathom’s products. The team combines process-based models with machine learning to build global-scale modelling frameworks that support flood hazard maps and catastrophe models.

You will work closely with climate and coastal modellers, ML engineers, and software engineers, using large-scale open datasets, HPC environments, Python, and Git/GitHub-based workflows. The role also involves running and evaluating process-based hydrological models over regional to global domains, exploring hydrological processes that drive flood risk, and contributing to scientific outputs and collaborations with academia and industry.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD or similar experience in computational hydrology, land-surface modelling, climate science, or a related field; experience with large-scale hydrological models and HPC; strong understanding of river flood processes; fluency in Python; and strong software development practices. Helpful extras include experience with Delatres HydroMT, Wflow, or distributed ML-based hydrological modelling.

Funding/employment: this is not a scholarship or studentship. It is a salaried permanent role with benefits such as private medical insurance, pension contributions, life assurance, income protection, dental insurance, and other employee perks.

Application: applications are reviewed as they arrive and the role remains open until filled. Use the Fathom careers page to apply.
