About this position

This joint PhD position at the University of Antwerp, in collaboration with the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology, offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of genetic risk scores as biomarkers for neurological disorders, specifically Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The project is co-supervised by Prof. Rosa Rademakers and Prof. Kristel Sleegers, whose labs are internationally recognized for their research into risk genes, molecular mechanisms, and biostatistical approaches in neurodegenerative diseases.

The research aims to address the challenge of molecular diagnosis in FTD and AD by developing innovative genetic risk scores that can predict underlying neuropathological subtypes, thereby improving diagnosis, disease management, and therapeutic development. The project will utilize genetic data from large, well-characterized patient-control cohorts and leverage both publicly available and in-house single nuclei RNA sequencing datasets from human brain tissue. Through transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS), the research will identify dysregulated pathways in disease subgroups and inform the selection of genetic variants for subtype-specific risk scores.

The position is ideal for candidates with a strong interest in biostatistics, genetics, and computational analysis. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a relevant field and be proficient in English.

Experience with programming (Python or R), Linux, large-scale data analysis, and workflow management systems is desirable but not required. The successful candidate will benefit from a vibrant, international research environment, access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, dedicated training programs, and opportunities for advanced training and international mobility, including collaborative visits to Alicante, Spain.

The doctoral scholarship is initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three additional years following positive evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is determined by university rates, and additional allowances for commuting and connectivity are provided. Applicants are expected to apply for their own fellowship, with full support from the institution.

The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. To apply, candidates should submit a detailed CV, a motivation letter, and contact details of three references via the university’s online application platform. For further information, contact the provided email addresses or visit the research group websites.
