About this position

Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in Germany is advertising a Junior Group Leader / Senior Postdoc in Computational Multiphase Flows at the Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering.

The research focus is on numerical modelling of dispersed and interfacial multiphase flows, including particle-laden and droplet-laden turbulent flows, particle-turbulence and droplet-turbulence interactions, non-spherical particle dynamics, immersed-boundary methods, Lagrangian particle and droplet tracking, particle/droplet interaction models, gas-liquid and interfacial flows, large-eddy simulation, compressible and incompressible multiphase-flow solvers, and high-performance computing.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the group’s computational multiphase-flow research, contribute to ongoing projects, help develop the in-house simulation framework (primarily in C and MPI), generate new research ideas, prepare externally funded proposals, supervise PhD researchers, postdocs and students, and contribute to teaching in numerical methods, multiphase flows, particle technology or related areas.

This position is especially suitable for a researcher aiming for scientific independence and leadership, and it offers the possibility to pursue a Habilitation.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related field; strong experience in computational multiphase flows; strong programming skills in C/C++/Fortran; MPI and HPC experience; a strong publication record; excellent English; and good German skills or willingness to reach sufficient proficiency within two years.

Funding/employment: full-time employment for an initial 3 years, extendable by another 3 years.

Application: submit via the online portal. Informal enquiries can be sent to Prof. Berend van Wachem at [email protected]. Deadline: 2026-10-07.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related field. A strong background in physical and numerical modelling of fluid-mechanical or multiphase-flow problems is required, along with demonstrated research experience in computational multiphase flows. Strong scientific programming skills in C, C++ or Fortran, experience with MPI and high-performance computing, experience developing numerical methods or simulation software, a strong publication record, excellent written and spoken English, and good German language skills or willingness to acquire sufficient German proficiency within two years are expected. Experience with immersed-boundary methods, Lagrangian tracking, interface-capturing methods, particle-interaction models or related techniques is particularly welcome.

How to apply

Apply via the online application portal at the provided link. For informal enquiries, contact Prof. Berend van Wachem by email before applying. Mention CFD Jobs Database record #20152 when responding.
