About this position

The Bernos F.I.S.H. lab at the University of Vermont is seeking a motivated graduate student for a funded MSc or PhD research assistantship in the human dimensions of fisheries. The project focuses on fisheries in Lake Champlain, with opportunities to study fishers, fish communities, and the social-ecological system connecting people and place.

Research topics may include the movement ecology of fishers and fishes, heterogeneity in fishing behaviors, harvest rate, motivation, preferences, decision-making, and social/knowledge networks among fishers, management agencies, and community organizations. The work may draw on surveys, interviews, web scraping, fishery sampling, telemetry, genetics, modeling, simulations, and stakeholder engagement.

Applicants from fisheries science, ecology, natural resources, environmental studies, geography, sociology, anthropology, data science, network analysis, and related fields are encouraged to apply. The position is open to both MSc and PhD applicants. PhD candidates should have a strong foundation for independent research, often demonstrated through a master's degree, research experience, or professional work.

This is a funded assistantship with a starting salary of $37,000 per year. International applicants are welcome. The preferred start date is January or May 2027, and review begins on 2026-09-01 on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

To apply, complete the Google Form linked in the post. If you have trouble accessing the form, contact Dr. Thais Bernos at [email protected].
