PhD and Master's Fellowship Programme in Ageing Research at the Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA) University of Cologne in Germany

The Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA) at the University of Cologne offers a comprehensive PhD and Master's fellowship programme focused on the interdisciplinary field of ageing research. The programme is conducted entirely in English and is designed to train the next generation of biomedical scientists to address the challenges of understanding the basic biology of ageing and translating discoveries into improved health outcomes for ageing populations.

Research areas at CGA include DNA damage and repair, genetics and epigenetics, immunology and inflammation, membrane and lipid biology, metabolism and nutrient sensing, mitochondrial biology, neuroscience and neurodegeneration, protein homeostasis, RNA metabolism, stem cells and tissue regeneration, systems biology, bioinformatics, and tumour biology. The programme is a joint venture with the CECAD Cluster of Excellence, University Hospital Cologne, Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, and Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research, providing students with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant international research environment.

The PhD programme lasts three years, with up to 12 candidates selected annually. Students benefit from intensive supervision, a thesis advisory committee, and a curriculum that includes scientific and professional skills courses, lecture series, journal clubs, and scientific retreats. Career development is supported through mentoring, career counselling, and an alumni mentoring programme. Master's fellows receive hands-on training, regular mentorship, and early integration into CGA events.

All PhD students receive a work contract with social benefits, including health insurance and 30 days of vacation per year. The salary is based on the German public salary scheme (TVL-E13, 65%, approx. 3,010 EUR/month gross in the first year) or an equivalent Max Planck Society contract. Annual travel grants for conferences are provided, and funding continues if the PhD extends beyond three years. There are no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of approximately 305 EUR covers public transport in Germany. The cost of living in Cologne is estimated at around 986 EUR per month.

Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent in a relevant field (biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, bioengineering, pharmacology, neuroscience, translational medicine, or related areas) and have sufficient research experience. Excellent English skills are required. Students with a Bachelor's degree and exceptional qualifications may apply for the Master's fellowship programme.
