About this position

The Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA) at the University of Cologne offers a comprehensive PhD training programme focused on the fundamental biology of ageing and its translation into health improvements. The CGA is a joint venture with the CECAD Cluster of Excellence, University Hospital Cologne, Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, and Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research, providing an interdisciplinary and international research environment.

Research areas span DNA damage and repair, genetics and epigenetics, immunology and inflammation, membrane and lipid biology, metabolism and nutrient sensing, mitochondrial biology, neuroscience and neurodegeneration, protein homeostasis, RNA metabolism, stem cells and tissue regeneration, systems biology, bioinformatics, and tumour biology. The programme aims to train biomedical scientists capable of tackling diverse challenges in ageing research.

PhD students benefit from intensive supervision, state-of-the-art facilities, and a curriculum that includes career development mentoring, scientific and professional skills courses, lecture series, journal clubs, and scientific retreats. Candidates participate in an on-site recruitment week, visiting laboratories of their choice, and up to 12 candidates are selected annually for the three-year programme, which starts between July and October. Welcome Days are held in October for new students.

The course organisation features a general lecture series, journal club sessions, and training modules covering lab methodologies, scientific writing, project management, and presentation skills. Each student is guided by a thesis committee of experienced researchers, with annual reports ensuring optimal supervision. Opportunities for scientific retreats, international meetings, and exchange programmes foster interaction with the global research community.

International elements include guest lecturers, language training, and intercultural skills development. While internships are not required, some students may spend research periods abroad. The programme is funded by DFG and IMPRS, and all PhD students receive a work contract with social benefits, health insurance, and 30 days of vacation for three years. Payment is based on the German public salary scheme TVL-E13 at 65% (approx. 3,010 EUR monthly gross salary in the first year) or an equivalent Max Planck Society contract. An annual travel grant for conferences is provided.

Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent in relevant fields and demonstrate sufficient research experience. Applications are accepted if the Master's degree is pending but must be awarded before the PhD start. Excellent English skills are required. Outstanding BSc graduates may apply for the Master's fellowship programme. The application deadline for the PhD programme is in autumn, and for the Master's fellowship programme is 15 July.

Accommodation is available through the student union or private housing market, with rent ranging from 200 to 500 EUR. The semester contribution is approx. 305 EUR, including a public transport ticket. Living costs are estimated at 986 EUR per month. The CGA provides structured research and supervision, career advisory services, and support for international students, including buddy programmes, specialist counselling, and visa assistance.

Cologne is a vibrant city with a rich cultural scene, offering museums, art exhibitions, concerts, and the famous Cologne Carnival. The University of Cologne is one of Germany's largest and most prestigious universities, distinguished by academic excellence and internationality.
