About this position
Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is offering a PhD Assistant position in the Department of Educational Studies within the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. This role is ideal for candidates interested in academic research and teaching, particularly in the field of Learning and Instruction with a focus on self-regulated learning (SRL) and its implementation.
At least 50% of your assignment will be dedicated to academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation. The research will center on learning and instruction, with opportunities to explore self-regulated learning and related educational theories. The position also involves supporting teaching activities in courses such as Care, Coaching and Guidance in Education, Language in Early Childhood and Primary Education, Language Didactics, and Practicum & Internship. Additional responsibilities include assisting with departmental services like exam supervision, information days, and engagement with professional field actors.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Pedagogical Sciences, Educational Sciences, Educational master in Behavioral Sciences, or a similar field. The degree requirement must be fulfilled by the start of the appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) is required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent teaching and communication skills in both Dutch and English, thorough knowledge of research methods, and familiarity with scientific educational literature, especially on self-regulated learning. Good writing skills in Dutch and fluent writing skills in English are highly recommended. Teaching experience or participation in extra training and conferences is advantageous.
The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of renewal twice for two years each, contingent on positive evaluations, for a maximum of six years. Remuneration follows salary scale AAP3, and staff members enjoy a comprehensive benefits package including training opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more. The earliest start date is 1 October 2026.
To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 26 May 2026. Required documents include a CV and study results (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), diploma transcript, and certificate of equivalence (if applicable). For foreign diplomas not in Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation is required. Late or non-online applications will not be considered. Job interviews are scheduled between 2 and 4 June 2026.
