About this position

PhD Assistantship at Louisiana State University in the Wetland and Aquatic Biogeochemistry Lab for research on phosphorus dynamics and harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal river and estuary systems in southeastern Louisiana.

The project examines how land-use change, internal sediment loading, and seasonal hydrology influence phosphorus availability and water-quality impairment in the Lake Pontchartrain Estuary and its tributaries. The student will lead field-based research including river transect sampling, high-resolution water-quality monitoring, intact sediment core incubation studies, and phosphorus fractionation analysis.

This opportunity combines aquatic biogeochemistry, nutrient cycling, soil chemistry, and environmental management, with direct relevance to watershed protection and HAB mitigation. Applicants should hold or soon complete an MS in environmental science, biogeochemistry, oceanography, ecology, or a related field, and should be comfortable with aquatic/estuarine fieldwork. Experience or interest in nutrient analysis, sediment chemistry, and water-quality monitoring is preferred, along with self-motivation and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Funding: $31,000/year stipend and 75% health insurance premium coverage.

Deadline: September 30, 2026. Starting date: after January 1, 2027.

How to apply: Email a CV, a brief statement of research interests, and contact information for three references to Dr. John White at [email protected]. Applications are to be sent only to this email.
