About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in AI-Supported Long-Term Hydropower Scheduling at the Department of Electric Energy in Trondheim, Norway. The position is hosted by the Electricity Markets and Energy Systems Planning (EMESP) research group and is part of the Norwegian Centre on AI for Decisions (AID), an interdisciplinary national AI centre led by NTNU and SINTEF.
The project focuses on hydropower scheduling, energy systems planning, electricity markets, stochastic optimization, and AI for decision support. The research will develop trustworthy hybrid methods that combine established stochastic optimization with AI-based learning to improve long-term and medium-term hydropower operation, multi-reservoir cascade scheduling, and participation in energy and reserve markets under uncertainty. The work emphasizes trust, knowledge embedding, generalization under uncertainty, and human-interpretable decision support.
Applicants should have a relevant master's degree in electrical power engineering, computer science, control engineering, chemistry, managerial economics with strong quantitative skills, or physics/mathematics with a specialization in operations research. A strong academic record is required, along with eligibility for NTNU's doctoral programme. Experience with optimization modelling and solvers such as JuMP, Pyomo, Gurobi, CPLEX, or HiGHS is an important advantage. Strong programming skills in Julia or Python, and familiarity with machine learning, reinforcement learning, or AI-based forecasting are preferred.
The position is full-time for 3 years, with a possible extension of 3 to 12 months for career-enhancing activities. Salary is normally NOK 580,000 gross per year, and the position is conditional on external funding. English proficiency at CEFR B2 level is required; TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge English scores may be used to document this. The application deadline is 19 October 2026.
To apply, submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge.no with a cover letter, project outline, CV, transcripts and diplomas, thesis copy or draft if applicable, publications, English documentation if relevant, and contact details for three referees.
