About this position
NTNU – the Norwegian University of Science and Technology – is advertising a full-time PhD Candidate position in Multimarket Bidding Decision Support in Nordic Power Markets at the Department of Electric Energy in Trondheim, Norway.
The position is part of the national Norwegian Centre on AI for Decisions (aiD), an interdisciplinary centre led by NTNU and SINTEF. The PhD candidate will join the Electricity Markets and Energy System Planning (EMESP) research group, working in a collaborative and international research environment focused on energy systems, electricity markets, AI, and optimization.
The project addresses the growing need for trustworthy decision support in Nordic power markets as wind power, battery storage, and other flexible resources increase in importance. The research will study sequential bidding decisions across day-ahead, balancing, and mFRR-related markets under uncertainty. Topics include probabilistic forecasting, market-state and regime information, future flexibility value, risk-aware decision-making, safe constraint handling, computational efficiency, and generalization under changing market conditions.
Methodologically, the project will combine deep reinforcement learning, stochastic optimization, and hybrid approaches that integrate machine learning with structured optimization. The initial use case is a wind power operator with battery storage participating in the day-ahead market and mFRR capacity and energy activation markets. Learning-based strategies will be benchmarked against rolling stochastic optimization approaches using the same information and operational constraints.
The appointment is for 3 years full-time, with the possibility of an additional 3 to 12 months of career-enhancing work. The gross salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. The position is conditional on external funding.
Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree in electrical power engineering, control engineering, managerial economics with strong quantitative skills, or physics/mathematics with a specialization in operations research. A strong academic record is required, and applicants must meet NTNU’s doctoral admission requirements. English proficiency at CEFR B2 is required, with C1 preferred.
The application deadline is 12 October 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge and should include a cover letter, project outline, CV, transcripts and diplomas, master’s thesis or submission confirmation, relevant publications, language documentation if applicable, and three referees.

What's required
Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree in electrical power engineering, control engineering, managerial economics with strong quantitative skills, or physics/mathematics with a specialization in operations research; the study programme must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree with 120 credits at master’s level. Master’s students may apply if the degree will be completed and documented before start and no later than autumn 2026. A strong academic record is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU’s grading scale or an equivalent foundation if grades are not letter-based. Applicants must meet admission requirements for the Faculty’s Doctoral Programme. English proficiency at CEFR B2 is required, with accepted test equivalents including TOEFL iBT 79-101, IELTS 5.5-6.0, or Cambridge English 160-179; C1-level English is preferred. Preferred experience includes electricity and power markets, imbalance forecasting, reinforcement learning, operations research or optimization, and strong programming/modeling skills in Julia, Python, or a similar language.
How to apply
Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Submit a cover letter, project outline, CV, transcripts and diplomas, master’s thesis (or submission confirmation), any publications, English language documentation if relevant, referee contacts, and any required supplement documents.
