About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Arctic Maritime Operations: AI-Enabled Forecasting and Decision Support in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Trondheim, Norway. The project is linked to the Norwegian Maritime AI Center (MAI) and focuses on the Marginal Ice Zone, Arctic sea ice dynamics, and operational decision support for safe maritime navigation in ice-affected waters.

The research combines AI, physics-informed modelling, machine learning, numerical simulation, geospatial data, and metocean forecasting. The candidate will work with heterogeneous observations such as marine radar, cameras, satellite Earth-observation products, ice charts, and forecasts, and will help develop hybrid AI–physics workflows, AI-ready datasets, surrogate models, and prototype forecasting/scenario-evaluation tools. The project also uses the SAMS framework for operationally oriented simulation of Arctic marine systems.

This is a fully funded PhD position with NTNU funding and MAI association. The appointment is for 3 years of doctoral work plus 1 year of career promotion work. Salary is normally NOK 550,800 per year before deductions, and working capital is provided for the project. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and MAI user partners such as Equinor and the Norwegian Coastal Administration.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need a relevant Master's degree in engineering, ocean technology, computer science, data science, geophysics, or equivalent; strong academic results (B or better on NTNU's scale); and good oral and written English. Norwegian language skills are preferred. Experience with numerical modelling, geospatial data, machine learning, high-performance computing, or interdisciplinary research is an advantage.

Funding details
