About this position
Vacant three-year postdoctoral fellow position in climate reanalysis at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Bergen, Norway.
The project sits within the center’s Climate Dynamics and Prediction group and its work on data assimilation, climate prediction, and long-term coupled reanalyses. The successful candidate will help develop a hybrid AI-physics version of NorCPM for long coupled reanalysis, combining the Norwegian Earth System Model with machine learning forecasting systems such as GraphCast and GLONET. The role is linked to the EU project CLIMATE_NEXT, which aims to reduce reanalysis computational costs, improve fidelity and physical consistency, and maximize use of observations.
Research keywords: climate reanalysis, data assimilation, Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF), machine learning, geophysics, climate modelling, climate dynamics, climate prediction, ocean forecasting.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in climate, meteorology, oceanography, and/or applied mathematics. The doctoral dissertation must already be submitted for evaluation by the deadline, and only candidates with an approved doctoral thesis and defence are eligible for employment. Strong programming skills (Fortran, shell scripting, Python/Matlab/R) and fluent English at C1 level are required. Experience with climate simulations, reanalysis, EnKF, machine learning, or climate prediction is an advantage.
Funding and conditions: this is a paid postdoctoral employment position with salary according to qualifications, plus pension schemes and flexible working hours. It is not described as a scholarship.
Application window: deadline is 27 October 2026. Start date is 1 March 2027. Apply via the job portal button and include a CV with contact information and two references.
