About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Digital Sovereignty within the Department of Computer Science in Trondheim, Norway. The project takes a sociotechnical Information Systems perspective and examines how Norwegian public-sector agencies and private companies navigate digital sovereignty challenges created by centralized and platformized digital infrastructures.
The research focuses on digital dependencies on global platform companies, cloud providers, and proprietary software vendors, and asks how organizations can identify, assess, and reconfigure these dependencies through governance arrangements, architectural alternatives, and collective action. The post is especially relevant for students interested in digital sovereignty, information systems, qualitative research methods, sociotechnical traditions, governance, cloud/platform infrastructures, and public-sector digital transformation.
This is a full-time PhD opening with a 4-year employment period and 25% teaching duties for the right candidate. The salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The position is physically based in Trondheim, Norway, and the successful candidate is expected to be present at the institution on a daily basis.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master's degree in information systems or an interdisciplinary background in computing, social sciences, law, or equivalent; a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS; strong academic performance (B or better); demonstrated knowledge of sociotechnical traditions; expertise in qualitative methods; and good English. Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is a strong advantage. Experience or publications on digital sovereignty or related topics are also advantageous.

Required attachments include transcripts and diplomas, CV, Master's thesis or draft, a research plan (max 1500 words/4 pages), a short declaration of AI use in the research plan and motivation letter, a short motivation letter, relevant publications or other research work, and three referees.
