About this position
PhD opportunity at Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation in the Netherlands, within the ERC-funded DONOR-PROTECT project. The position sits in a multidisciplinary program on personalized donor health protection, combining epidemiology, transfusion medicine, data science, genetics, immunology, and social sciences.
This specific PhD focuses on the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of personalized donor management. The project will examine questions such as which personal data may ethically be used, how donors perceive personalized recommendations, whether personalization could increase inequalities, how autonomy and trust can be safeguarded, and what legal requirements apply across Europe.
Research activities include a systematic review of scientific and policy literature, focus groups and semi-structured interviews with donors, donor physicians, collection staff, researchers, policymakers, blood establishment leaders, and patient representatives, plus a cross-cultural and international analysis of ethical perspectives and legal frameworks.
The candidate will join the Donor Health research group at Sanquin, work closely with Amsterdam UMC, and collaborate with partners in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, France, the Etablissement Français du Sang, and the University of Rennes. The PhD is part of a group of PhD students and a postdoctoral researcher led by Prof. dr. Katja van den Hurk, with co-supervision from Dr. Jean-Baptiste Thibert.
Eligibility highlights: a master's degree in Bioethics, Medical Anthropology, Sociology, Health Sciences, Public Health, Law, or a related field; strong interest in ethics and healthcare innovation; qualitative research affinity; excellent English; French is a plus. The position is fully funded for 4 years and includes a salary, bonuses, holiday allowance, travel reimbursement, development budget, and pension contributions.
