About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Human Performance and Situational Awareness in Multi-UxV Remote Operations at the Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering in Ålesund, Norway.

The project sits at the intersection of human factors, psychology, maritime operations, cognitive science, automation, and interface design. It investigates how remote operation center (ROC) operators maintain situational awareness while supervising multiple unmanned vehicles (UxV) such as UAVs, USVs, and UUVs in defence and preparedness scenarios. The research will examine cognitive load, autonomy level, authority sharing, decision quality, and the impact of screen-based supervision on awareness of the physical environment.

The successful candidate will design and run simulator-based experiments and full-scale field studies at Fjordlab, using methods such as SAGAT, NASA-TLX, and eye-tracking. The work is embedded in a multidisciplinary environment and linked to the MIND & SHELL project, with collaboration across NTNU Ålesund, defence/preparedness stakeholders, and technology partners.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need a relevant master's degree (or equivalent) in maritime operations, aviation, defence operations, or a related high-stakes operational field; a strong academic record (B or better); admission eligibility for NTNU's Doctoral Programme in Engineering; and strong English skills. Preferred backgrounds include human factors and ergonomics, maritime studies, cognitive science, and organizational studies. Experience with experimental methods, qualitative/quantitative evaluation, fieldwork, and Scandinavian language skills are advantageous.

Funding and terms: this is a salaried PhD position, normally NOK 550,800 gross per year depending on qualifications and seniority, with a 3-year employment period. The post is based in Ålesund and requires daily physical presence at the institution.
