About this position
Leiden University is advertising a PhD candidate position in immunology, cardiovascular disease, and atherosclerosis, with a specific focus on inflammatory dendritic cell subsets and other myeloid immune cells. The project is hosted by the Faculty of Science and the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR), within the division of BioTherapeutics.
The research aims to understand how dendritic cell subsets contribute to plaque destabilization in advanced atherosclerosis, identify pro-atherogenic immune cell populations, and validate potential therapeutic targets. The work combines analysis of human atherosclerotic tissue and datasets with in vitro experiments and in vivo validation.
Applicants should have a recent Master’s degree in bio-pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical sciences, immunology, molecular biology, or a related field. A strong background in immunology and/or cardiovascular research is preferred. Experience with in vivo studies, spectral flow cytometry, single-cell sequencing (working in R), microscopy, and molecular biology is an advantage. Strong English skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are also expected.
The appointment is full-time and initially for one year, with extension for three additional years after positive evaluation. The salary ranges from €3,204 gross per month in year 1 to €4,051 gross per month in year 4, plus holiday and end-of-year bonuses and other employment benefits.
The position is located in Leiden, Netherlands. Applications must be submitted online via AcademicTransfer before 31 October 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, CV, MSc thesis or publication if available, transcripts and degree copy, and two recommendation letters.
