About this position
Maastricht University in the Netherlands is recruiting a PhD Candidate in Mechanical Circulatory Support. This position sits at the intersection of biomedical engineering, medical science, cardiovascular physiology, and clinical research, with a strong focus on cardiogenic shock, cardiothoracic surgery, hemodynamics, organ perfusion, and device–heart interactions.
You will work in a state-of-the-art Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) experimental lab and contribute to real-world clinical analysis in patients treated for cardiogenic shock and/or undergoing cardiothoracic surgery. The role combines laboratory-based experimental studies with prospective and retrospective cohort analysis, aiming to improve patient selection, timing, and device strategies for life-saving circulatory support.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, cardiologists, biomedical engineers, and data scientists within Maastricht University / Maastricht UMC+. The post is especially suited to applicants with a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Human Biology, or a closely related field, plus strong analytical skills and experience in pre-clinical or clinical studies. Dutch at C1 level or higher is required because of patient interaction and clinical research involvement.
Funding includes a 12-month contract at 1.0 FTE with the prospect of a 3-year extension after positive evaluation. The gross monthly salary is €3204–€4051, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The deadline for applications is 20 September 2026. Apply through the AcademicTransfer link and contact Dr. Shreyas B. Rao for more information.
