About this position
PhD opportunity in zebrafish models of leukodystrophies within the POLARIS Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network.
This project focuses on developing robust preclinical outcome measures in zebrafish models of leukodystrophies, including RNASET2 deficiency, adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), Krabbe disease, and metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). The work combines translational neuroscience, rare disease research, behavioural phenotyping, advanced imaging, and quantitative image analysis to improve disease modelling and support clinically meaningful preclinical readouts.
You will develop and standardise behavioural assays, characterise disease phenotypes using multimodal imaging, and apply advanced techniques such as MRI, high-resolution confocal microscopy, and electron microscopy. The project also includes building and refining imaging analysis pipelines, benchmarking outcomes across disease models, and comparing experimental readouts with clinically relevant measures.
The selected candidate will be employed by the University of York and join the POLARIS consortium. Academic supervision and disease-specific expertise are provided by Dr Noémie Hamilton at the York Biomedical Research Institute and the Department of Biology, University of York. Planned secondments include Zantiks and the University of Liverpool’s Centre for Preclinical Imaging.
Eligibility and requirements: a Master’s degree in life sciences or a related field; no doctoral degree already held; strong interest in translational neuroscience and rare disease research; experience with microscopy and image-data analysis is preferred, ideally with in vivo zebrafish models; behavioural or neurological phenotyping, animal research, animal-welfare principles, robust experimental design, coding, GA3 Elements, machine learning, or quantitative image analysis are advantageous. English fluency is essential. MSCA mobility rules apply: at the deadline, applicants must have a Master’s degree and must not have lived or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the previous three years.
