PhD Candidate in Mobility, Environment, and Well-being (Ref: 26-26) Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research in Luxembourg

LISER (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research) is recruiting a PhD candidate for the project “Mobility, environment, and well-being” within the Doctoral Training Unit C-SOS (Competitiveness within a Safe Operating Space). The position is based in the Urban Development and Mobility department at LISER in Belval, Luxembourg, and is part of an interdisciplinary consortium involving the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), the University of Luxembourg, and STATEC. The successful candidate will be enrolled in a PhD at the University of Luxembourg’s doctoral schools.

This project investigates how daily mobility shapes stress and well-being across adulthood, with a particular focus on the fine-grained temporal and spatial dimensions of movement, activity spaces, environmental exposure, and transport behavior. The research sits at the intersection of health geography, transport research, and social epidemiology. It will use two Luxembourg-based cohort studies: FragMent (adults) and MAMBHA (older adults). These datasets include information on well-being, stress, transport habits, environmental perceptions, map-based questionnaires on regular mobility and activity patterns, and geographically explicit ecological momentary assessment combining GPS data with repeated measures over 15 days.

The position is a good fit for candidates interested in quantitative analysis of mobility and environmental exposures, and in examining links between transport modes, urban environments, stress, and health outcomes. The role includes leading the research effort on mobility and transportation patterns, urban environments and exposure patterns, and stress and well-being. Candidates should bring or be close to completing a Master’s degree in geography, public health, epidemiology, transport sciences, data science applied to health, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or a related field. Strong quantitative skills, data management and statistics expertise, and excellent English writing and communication skills are expected; GIS experience is welcome but not required.

The post is a full-time, funded PhD position on a fixed-term contract of 36 months with a possible one-year extension. The yearly gross salary is specified as 51,690.72 EUR in year 1, 54,212.28 EUR in year 2, and 56,733.72 EUR in year 3. The start date is 1 February 2027.
