About this position

Technische Universität Ilmenau is advertising a PhD candidate position in simulations of compressible turbulence within the Fluid Mechanics Group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) under Priority Program DFG-SPP 2410 CoScaRa and is carried out jointly with a research group at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig. The research focuses on the dynamics and small-scale statistical properties of compressible turbulence, including the kinetic energy dissipation rate, its Reynolds-number dependence, and the dissipative anomaly.

The work involves direct numerical simulations of compressible flows at high Reynolds and Mach numbers, together with analysis of statistical and geometric properties of dissipation. The project sits at the interface of fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, and machine learning.

Eligible applicants should hold a Master or Diploma degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or Physics. Strong backgrounds in turbulence, statistical physics, or PDEs are preferred. Experience with scientific programming and/or machine learning tools such as Fortran90, Python, MPI, OpenMP, or OpenACC is welcomed.

The position starts in January 2027 and is offered for 3 years initially, with 75% salary in year 1 and 100% salary in years 2 and 3, plus a possible extension. The application deadline is 2026-10-31.

Apply by email only to Prof. Jörg Schumacher at [email protected] with a cover letter, CV, publication list (if applicable), certificates/transcripts, and 1–2 references.
