As the grid transitions to higher penetrations of inverter-based resources (IBRs), such as wind, solar, and BESS, the challenge of maintaining system stability increases. Statkraft’s Greener Grid Parks are at the forefront of delivering stability services to replace traditional synchronous generators, utilizing both grid-forming inverters and synchronous compensators.
The successful candidate will collect and analyze operational data from Statkraft’s plants, including wind power facilities, to assess performance under fault conditions and inform technology development. The research will contribute to ensuring grid robustness against blackouts and will involve comparative studies across Statkraft’s operations in the UK, Norway, and Ireland. The project will also engage with ongoing grid code modifications and system strength initiatives.
Applicants should have a first-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Data Analytics, or a related field. Essential skills include power systems analysis using EMT models (PSCAD) and RMS (DIgSILENT), as well as expertise in data collection, management, and processing. The studentship is open to both UK and international applicants, with specific deadlines for each group.
The funding package includes full UK tuition fees, a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum, and an additional £3,000 per annum for consumables, travel, and research support. The EnerHy CDT also provides a substantial Research Training Support Grant and additional funding for outreach and professional development.
