About this position

PhD fellowships are available at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, in Quantum Optics and Quantum Sensing. The projects are part of the QUANTOP laboratories and the Copenhagen Center for Biomedical Quantum Sensing (CBQS), with research focused on room-temperature atomic ensembles, quantum-limited sensing, magnetometry, magnetic induction tomography, entangled states, and squeezed states of light and atomic spins.

The work aims to develop quantum sensors for electromagnetic fields and ultimately applications in biomedical sensing in collaboration with medical professionals. The group works on interfacing quantum systems with light and on using entangled light-atom states for enhanced sensitivity.

Supervisor: Prof. Eugene Polzik ([email protected]).

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a degree equivalent to a Danish master’s degree in a relevant field. Strong preparation in quantum optics, atomic physics, magnetic field generation/measurement, radiofrequency electronics, computer control, and modelling is preferred, along with relevant publications, work experience, and good English skills.

Funding and terms: The position is a full-time PhD fellowship for up to 3 years, with salary and employment terms according to Danish state academic agreements. No stipend amount is specified.

Deadline: 14 October 2026, 23:59 GMT+2. Start date: 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

How to apply: Submit the application in English through the APPLY NOW portal. Include a motivation letter, CV, diplomas and transcripts, publication list if applicable, and reference letters if available.
