About this position
DTU Electro (Technical University of Denmark) is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship in Silicon Quantum Electrodynamics at the Deep Nanoscale within the Horizon Europe Doctoral Network QUEST – Quantum Electrodynamics with Silicon Nanotechnology.
The project sits at the intersection of physics, photonics, quantum optics, electromagnetics, nanofabrication, and materials science. The selected doctoral candidate will join the Photonic Nanotechnology group and work on the theory, design, and modelling of optical cavities with deep subwavelength confinement and strong light-matter interaction. The research includes numerical simulations, modal expansions of electromagnetic fields, silicon nanostructure design for quantum optics experiments, and modelling to interpret experimental results. The project also explores interactions between optical cavity fields and fast electrons for transmission electron microscope experiments, as well as cavities with embedded color centers.
This is a collaborative doctoral project with strong theory-experiment interaction. The PhD is based at DTU Electro in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark, with two secondments of at least three months each at Humboldt University in Berlin and the Max Planck Institute in Göttingen.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent. A strong background in photonics, quantum optics, laser physics, numerical techniques, theoretical physics, or electromagnetics is preferred. The call emphasizes excellent academic records, strong motivation, independence, and good English communication skills. MSCA mobility rules apply: applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment.
Funding: the position is fully funded under MSCA rules and includes salary, mobility allowance, family allowance where applicable, and pension. The post states a minimum wage of DKK 30264.08 base salary plus DKK 1580.90 PhD supplement. Employment duration is 3 years.
Application window: apply online by 2026-11-01. Submit one PDF in English containing a cover letter, CV, and grade transcripts plus BSc/MSc diploma with grading scale description. You may apply before receiving the master's degree, but you cannot start before it is awarded.
Supervisory contacts: Senior Researcher Philip Trøst Kristensen and Professor Søren Stobbe.
