About this position

PhD Studentship: Development of a Digital Twin for Smart Sustainable Steel Section Production

This PhD studentship is based at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, within the Advanced Steel Research Centre at WMG. The project sits with the Digital Twins team and focuses on building a digital twin for steel section production, combining empirical modelling, finite element analysis, and machine learning to predict microstructural evolution and mechanical properties across the steelmaking process.

The research aims to help steel producers respond to live production conditions, optimise process parameters, improve product performance, reduce reject and downgrade rates, and support sustainability goals in a sector facing rising energy costs and greater feedstock variability. The work will use real-world mill data such as temperature and rolling loads, together with existing models developed by the Advanced Steel Research Group, to create a cohesive through-process framework.

The successful PhD candidate will develop the architecture, robustness, and limitations of the combined modelling framework and help implement it in an industrial setting. The project includes a placement with an industry partner, with timing and duration agreed by all parties.

Funding: DigitalMetals CDT funded studentship. No stipend amount or tuition coverage details are stated in the post.

Deadline: 28 February 2027.

How to apply: Use the jobs.ac.uk application link provided in the post and submit your application before the deadline. Review the project page carefully for any additional instructions or eligibility details.
