About this position
PhD opportunity at the Earlham Institute, Norwich, United Kingdom
This funded PhD project is titled A single-cell atlas of the Euglena gracilis cell cycle and is hosted by the Earlham Institute within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NRPDTP). The project focuses on single-cell RNA sequencing, cell cycle biology, genomics, bioinformatics, data analysis, data science, microbiology, and molecular biology.
Research focus: Euglena gracilis is a highly unusual single-celled protist with distinctive gene regulation, including trans-splicing, base J, and strong post-transcriptional control. The PhD will build the first single-cell atlas of Euglena, profiling thousands of cells to reconstruct gene-expression waves across the cell cycle and to test how light and temperature alter this programme.
Training and environment: The student will be trained across the full pipeline, including culturing and imaging Euglena, developing single-cell RNA-seq workflows, and computational reconstruction of the cell cycle. The project is based at the Earlham Institute, a BBSRC research centre of excellence, and offers access to a collaborative research community plus training and career development through the NRPDTP.
Funding: Fully funded 4-year studentship. Funding includes tuition fees, a living stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27), and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.
Eligibility: Applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent 2:1 Bachelors (Honours) degree. The programme welcomes applicants from biological, computational, or physical sciences. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category.
Application window: This project has been shortlisted for funding by the NRPDTP. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2, 3, and 4 February 2027. The project is for October 2027 entry, with full-time study starting 1 October 2027.
How to apply: Visit the NRPDTP website for eligibility and application guidance. Use the bespoke Personal Statement and Research Statement templates provided on the programme website when submitting your application.
